Coming to comic shops around the country on Wednesday, September 23 is the highly anticipated Wolverine Giant-Size Old Man Logan, promising to be one of the all-time greats in the history of Giant-Size Marvels.

Written by Mark Millar and featuring the usual highly-detailed art of Steve McNiven, this One-Shot issue finally wraps-up the sold out eight-part storyline that started in summer of 2008. In the beginning of the story which debuted in Wolverine #66, we see Logan 50 years in the future as a down on his luck farmer with a wife and two young children who leases his property from the Hulk Gang, a group of hill-billyish monstrosities that have come to collect the rent that they know that Logan can't afford to pay.

They serve Logan up a vicious beating as he refuses to pop his claws and fight back against the gang, much to the trio's enjoyment, due to a reason that is not revealed until later in the storyline. That evening as Logan slowly heals from his wounds, his mutant healing power not as effecient as it once was, he receives a visit from his old friend Clint Barton (Hawkeye). Barton is now blind and is need of someone to accompany to him on an important top secret mission to deliver a mysterious box across the country. The U.S. is now divided up into territories amongst the super-villains that were finally victorious in an all out war against the super-heroes some years prior. Knowing that Logan is in need of money, Hawkeye offers to pay him in exchange for the accompaniment.

They depart together on their journey across the United States, and come across dangers that include everything from an army of the Mole Man's subterranean Moloids to dinosaurs and even the decendants of some of their former allies.

The series left off with Logan and Hawkeye making it to New York (now called New Babylon) with the case, and a bad ending for Hawkeye at the hands of agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. who had been working an undercover operation the whole time. Wolverine engages in a final all-out battle against the Red Skull at the White House, and cuts off his head with Captain America's shield which The Skull has kept as a trophy from his final victory against him.

As Logan returns home to his farm, he is told by his neighbors that his family has been slaughtered at the hands of the Hulk Gang. As they try and console him by telling him that the best thing that he can do now is to quietly mourn them and not cause any trouble, he corrects his neighbors by unsheathing his claws and growling: "The name's not Logan, bub. . . it's Wolverine"

Millar has promised the Giant-Size finale will be well worth the wait that eager comic fans have endured, as the extra time and room in the book will make for a memorable conclusion featuring an intense showdown with Logan against the Hulk that will be a battle for the ages.

With both Millar (Kick-Ass, Ultimates) and McNiven (Civil War) really working at the top of their games right now, this issue will deliver as promised. Millar has recently talked about revisiting the 'Old Man Logan' future universe, with more stories that could possibly be told. It would be hard to believe, however that those stories could deliver that punch that the Wolverine: Old Man Logan storyarc has.

  • Five Favorite Avengers: Roger Stern

By TJ Dietsch “And there came a day, a day unlike any other, when Earth's mightiest heroes and heroines found themselves united against a common threat. On that day, the Avengers were born—to fight the foes no single super hero could withstand!” Each Friday Marvel.com will present a different column focusing on the one and only Avengers. From line-ups to costumes to villains to classic stories and beyond, we’ve got you covered on the history of Marvel’s most prolific team of heroes! So let the call go out: Avengers Assemble! If you're a long time Avengers fan, some of your favorite classic issues likely sport Roger Stern's name between the covers. He wrote over 50 issues of AVENGERS in the 80’s as well as limited series and one-shots like AVENGERS #1/2, AVENGERS FOREVER, AVENGERS INFINITY and AVENGERS TWO: WONDER MAN AND BEAST. And that's just his work on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes! Stern took his turn writing just about every major Marvel star at one time or another, so it's safe to say he knows these characters. Stern recently returned to his era of the team with HULK SMASH AVENGERS #3, which pitted the Green Goliath against a group consisting of Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Wasp, Captain Marvel, She-Hulk and Hawkeye. With the writer’s returning to the franchise, it seemed like the perfect time to ask him about his favorite team members. He gladly played along, but wants everyone to know that the following entries come in no particular order. Captain America “Cap is a living legend, America's super-soldier, and an exemplar of the greatest generation. He's always been Mister Avenger to me. Before Cap, the Avengers were a loose confederation of super-heroes, but when he joined, they truly became a team.” The Wasp “Never, ever underestimate this lady. She may be cute as a button, but she can also be hard as nails. Plus, she gave the Avengers their name. What, you say she's dead? Yeah, and so were Cap and Thor once upon a time. I wouldn't count her out yet.” Iron Man “Tony Stark is a flawed man who is always trying to overcome his flaws. He's a self-made super hero who is always reinventing himself. And don't forget, he turned his family mansion over to the Avengers to use as their headquarters.” Captain Marvel “I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for Monica. She was the new kid, learning on the job how best to use her amazing powers and growing into her role as an Avenger. It's never been the same without her.” Hawkeye “He's snarky, arrogant, and always questioning authority, but whenever he's away from the Avengers, you can tell there's an empty seat at the table. Next to Cap, Hawk is arguably the Avenger's best hand-to-hand combatant, and he's always pushing himself to be better.” - 2 days ago
